Every explorer must align with our conservation guidelines prior to entering the unfenced corridor.
-
Acoustic Mindfulness
We maintain strict silence near water systems, observation hides, and ancient elephant pathways to minimize stress on resident herds.
-
Pack It Out
All non-biodegradable items brought into the sanctuary must leave with you. We maintain a zero single-use plastic policy across all field loops.
-
Safe Distance
We prioritize animal welfare, keeping ethical buffers to ensure natural, unhindered wildlife behavior. Vehicles and kayakers will never cut off migration corridors.
Preparing for Your Expedition
Location & Travel: Located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, Kalavava is positioned just 1 hour from Sigiriya/Dambulla and 4.5 hours from Colombo. We gladly arrange seamless private transfers or coordinates for classic train arrivals to the regional station.
The Seasonal Cycle: While beautiful year-round, the dry season (typically June to September) brings spectacular elephant gatherings along the twin reservoir edges, offering incredible opportunities for photography and conservation tracking.
Seasonal Packing Guidelines
- Lightweight, earthy/neutral toned clothing (khaki, green, sand).
- Sturdy, silent walking shoes for forest tracks.
- Reusable water flask (single-use bottles are restricted).
